Links elsewhere on each tab page provide one-click access to news and content from other sources.
Navigating from Full Text Screens
Options to return to a tab page after viewing full text articles and documents depend on the type of full text content viewed.
Some full text content will open in a new window. For example, an Upcoming Events link will open to the official web page for a conference. A Press Releases article or content accessed from Google e-Discovery News will also open in a new window, as will a PDF file from the Monthly PDF Issues.
When you are finished with an item, close the full text window to return to the tab page you were viewing.
After viewing articles or documents from News &
Analysis, Cases, Ethics Opinions, Court Rules, or Search Results, click the back arrows above the full text to return to content listings.
If you prefer, go to any tab page by clicking a tab instead of returning to previously viewed content listings.
Sorts, Navigators, and Content Modifiers
Sorts, navigators, and content modifiers provide quick and flexible means of sorting and filtering content. These tools display on a vertical toolbar to the left of content frames. Use sorts and modifiers as needed. You can click on a heading in the content frame anytime in the process to view the full text. The sort in use will display with a color in the background.
Sorts are located at the top of the toolbar.
Click a sort to reorder content for viewing based on criteria such as Most Recent.
Please note: Sorts affect the entire body of content in a frame, and will clear a search or any other content refinement.
The default sort for News &
Analysis content is Most Recent, published within the last 30 days. Select the All Stories sort to view all News & Analysis content in the content frame.
The default sort for Press Releases is Date, with the most recent date on top. Select Issuing Organization to order listings by organization.
Navigators are categories of content modifiers you select and use to filter content inside a frame. Keywords, Companies, and People are navigators. Navigators have + (plus) signs next to them to indicate they have active content modifiers inside.
Click a navigator to reveal content modifiers, names and key terms found in the content you are browsing.
The number of articles in the content frame that contain that modifier display next to each content modifier.
If more content modifiers are available than display for a navigator, a link called More appears after the last displayed modifier. Click More to expand the list of modifiers.
Click a content modifier to narrow and focus the selection in the content frame. Use multiple content modifiers to refine content.
When you employ a content modifier, the modifier and associated navigator display at the top of the content frame as Your Selections. The ribbon of selections expands as you add content modifiers.
The number of articles left in the content frame follows the last modifier on the Your Selections line.
Content modifiers are interactive. When a modifier is added to Your Selections, it displays there and not on the vertical toolbar. The number of documents that contain each remaining content modifier on the toolbar adjusts to the remaining content in the frame.
Click the check box next to a content modifier to remove it from the Your Selections line.
Click the Clear All button located next to the Your Selections line if you want to clear all modifiers and return to the original content view.
Digital Discovery & e-Evidence provides convenient tools to locate and filter content for viewing. Sorts, navigators and content modifiers refine content inside the content frame on a tab page or on a Search Results page. Search locates information using your keywords and phrases. Advanced Search provides options to use search fields and your search terms and to limit search content by collection and date. Combine sorts, searches and content modifiers as needed to find the information you need.
Search displays as a text box with an adjacent arrow button on the Digital Discovery & e-Evidence banner.
To use Search, type word(s) into the text box and then click the adjacent arrow or press Enter on your keyboard.
Search can be used two ways:
• To search all collections on the site
• To search content on one tab page
To search all site content, use Search before you use any content modifiers on a tab page.
To search content limited to a tab page, use Search after you use a content modifier on the tab page.
Search terms are words, names, or phrases that you use to find information. Type a single search term or a combination of search terms into either the Search or Advanced Search text box.
• Search terms are not case sensitive. Upper, lower, and mixed case will locate the same results.
Example: TorrentSpy and torrentspy will locate the same results.
• Put quotation marks around phrases or names that include commonly used words. If quotation marks are not present, each word is searched separately.
Example: "computer forensics"
• Use hyphens or parentheses for hyphenated terms.
Example: cost-shifting or (cost shifting)
• Combine search terms as needed. Combine terms in one input or in steps. Combined search terms assume the search operator, AND, between words.
Example: (cost shifting) Toshiba
Example: 1st search: (cost shifting)
2nd search: Toshiba
Both terms will display on the
Your Selections: line.
• Punctuation is optional.
Example: S. 2450 and S 2450 will locate the same results.
Advanced Search provides tools to quickly focus a search by limiting content, using multiple search fields, and using date limitation options.
Advanced Search is accessed by clicking the Advanced Search link next to Search on the Digital Discovery & e-Evidence banner on every tab page.
Please Note: Advanced Search clears any previous search or content filtering when used.
If you perform an Advanced Search from a Search Results page, you will erase your previous search results.
However, you can use Search and content modifiers after you perform an Advanced Search to further refine your search.
Advanced Search opens with three collections selected: Cases, News & Analysis, and Ethics Opinions. To narrow content to search, click to deselect collections.
Advanced Search provides options to search by a field or by a combination of fields.
Please note: The Cases option for search content must be selected in order to use the Case Name, Citation, or Court fields. Otherwise, results will be zero documents.
Type a full or partial case name in the Case Name box.
Examples: Mobilisa, Inc. v. John Doe 1 or Mobilisa or John Doe 1 will locate the same case.
Type a full case citation in the Citation box for best results.
Example: 486 F Supp 2d 705 or WL 416700 will locate cases.
Type a full or partial jurisdiction in the Court box. Do not abbreviate numbers or tribunals.
Example: Ninth Circuit or ninth will locate results, while 9th Cir. will not locate results.
Use Advanced Search to construct a search that contains one or more Case fields from the top of the form, a search operator, and search terms that you type in the Word(s) box.
The search operator, AND, is the default. Scroll and click to select OR or NOT.
Use the Word(s) box to enter your own search terms. Use a single word or phrase or a combination of terms as needed.
Use either Limit by date option, if desired. Scroll and click to select 30, 60, 90 days or year to date to use the first option.
Example: Court:
Texas Court of Appeals will locate a handful of cases. Court: Texas Court of Appeals and Limit by most recent 90 days locates 1 case.
To use the second date limitation option, enter the beginning and end dates to search as shown below each box.
Once you have constructed your search, click the Search button at the bottom of the form or press Enter on your keyboard to view search results.
Click the Reset Form button if you prefer to start a new search.
Clear or Cancel Advance Search
To clear the Search Results page, click Clear All at the top of the Search Results page. You may also click a tab to visit a tab page.
If you open Advanced Search and then decide not to use this tool, simply click the Advanced Search link again to close it, or click any tab to go to that tab page.
Combined Fields Advanced Search Examples
The Advanced Search form will display with three different collections checked for searching: News &
Analysis, Cases, and Ethics Opinions. Results from each collection will be clearly marked on the Search Results page to enable you to view documents from the collection(s) of your choice.
In order to use the Case search fields on the Advanced Search form, Cases must be included in a search. A combined field search can include Cases, or the search can be limited to Cases by deselecting News & Analysis and Ethics Opinions.
To find a case and other cases that cite the case, enter all or part of the case name into the Word(s) box.
Example: Word(s): Zubulake
To find a particular case that cites a case, use both the Case Name and the Word(s) fields. Advanced Search will insert the search operator, AND.
Example: Case Name:
Delta Financial AND Word(s): Zubulake
To find a case heard before the Eighth Circuit Court that contain the term spoliation, use both the Court and the Word(s) boxes. Advanced Search will insert the search operator AND.
Example: Court: Eighth Circuit AND Word(s): spoliation
If you prefer to view cases from the Eighth Circuit that do not contain the term spoliation, use the Court and Word(s) boxes, but scroll the search operators and click to select NOT.
Example: Court: Eighth Circuit NOT Word(s): spoliation
If you wanted to view all the Zubulake cases and all cases that contain the term cost-shifting, use the Case Name box and the Word(s) box, and scroll and click to select the search operator, OR.
Example: Case Name: Zubulake OR Word(s): cost-shifting
The content frame on the Search Results page displays links to documents located by your search. Above the content frame, your search term(s) and the number of documents located will display in the Your Selections line.
Combined search terms and content modifiers will display as Your Selections in the order that you added them. Search terms are preceded by the word Search and content modifiers are preceded by a navigator such as People.
The number of items located by your search terms and content modifiers will display after the last item on the Your Selections line.
Search results display in date order. If you prefer to view results by relevance, click By Relevance at the top of the search results listings.
